Galilean telescope

A convex objective and a concave eyepiece — the view stays upright, the beam comes out narrower.

Lippershey had shown a tube in the Hague in 1608. Galileo heard about it, made his own, and pointed it at Jupiter in January 1610. The moons were enough to break the old sky. The optics are a convex objective and a concave eyepiece: the image stays erect, the field is narrow, the tube can be short.

Opera glasses are still this pair. Kepler’s two-convex design, two years later, inverts the world and sees more of it. This bench keeps the Galilean order — parallel in, erect, a narrower bundle out.
